Competitor price tracking
Competitor price tracking is how you learn about a competitor's pricing changes the day they happen — instead of the day a customer tells you about it.
Why competitor price tracking matters
Prices are the fastest-moving signal in competitive intelligence. A competitor can change a price, add a plan, or kill a free tier overnight — and if you're not watching, the first person to tell you might be a prospect on a sales call, or a customer asking for a discount to match what they saw elsewhere.
Tracking competitor prices is the difference between competing on information and competing on surprise. The businesses that track systematically see the change on day one and get to choose their response. The ones that don't find out in the worst possible moment.
What to track
- Pricing pages — the obvious one, and the most important
- Plan pages — tiers change: new plans appear, old ones vanish, features move up
- Feature/landing pages — where competitors announce what's included at each level
- Trial and pricing terms — trial lengths and seat limits change more often than you'd think
You don't need to watch everything. A focused list of your five most direct competitors' pricing surfaces is worth more than a sprawling watchlist of everyone.
How often to check
It depends on how fast your market moves. If competitors repricing weekly matters to your win rate, check hourly or daily. If your market is stable, weekly is plenty. The tool should let you choose — a fixed "every 24 hours" is a compromise that's wrong for both fast and slow markets.
The signal problem
Most "website monitoring" tools send alerts for any change: a banner rotated, a timestamp updated, an ad refreshed. Over a week, that's a pile of meaningless emails — and the moment you start ignoring them, the tool has failed you, because the real change is buried in the noise.
Pricing-aware tracking solves this by filtering before alerting: it strips the page down to what matters — prices, plans, features — and only pings you when one of those actually moved. That's the difference between a tool you read and a tool you delete.
